The U.S. Is Poised to Hit a New Oil Gusher - Kiplinger.com
A new black gold rush is under way, this time in North Dakota. The potential payoff is huge — up to 100 billion barrels of oil. That’s twice the size of Alaska’s reserves and potentially enough to meet all U.S. oil needs for two decades.
Until now, the obstacles to production seemed overwhelming. The crude oil is locked away in rocks that are buried miles underground in the Bakken Play, a field that stretches into Montana and Saskatchewan, Canada.
I’ll be posting more of this as I find it.
I have read various accounts of the oil find in North Dakota/Montana. The accounts state that the size of it may be between 100 billion barrels and 500+ billion barrels (depending which one you read) of oil. What is the number AND WHY AREN’T WE HEARING MORE ABOUT THIS??????
We NEED this oil. Can you clue me in here?

The oil companies are downplaying the Bakken Shale oil deposits, claiming that oil prices are skyrocketing due to speculation in the market, rather than lack of supply. This is, of course, complete and utter bullshit, as is their claim that drilling in Bakken would not be financially feasible even with oil prices as high as they are, due to the methods they need to use to retrieve the oil (the standard involves straight vertical drilling, while in Bakken they would have to use a costlier angled method to break up the shale). The truth is that the high prices are a phenomenal boon to the oil industry in general (last year’s record-breaking profits are proof of this) and the oil companies do not view it in their best interests to do anything that will lower them. More Research is underway, and I will be posting more on this subject soon. Stay tuned…

In response to your question about the amount of oil in the Bakken Shale, it’s been estimated at anywhere between 100 to 900(!)BBS, which, at the most liberal estimation, would put the US in a position to be producing roughly THREE TIMES THE AMOUNT THAT SAUDI ARABIA PRODUCES. That kind of production power could single-handedly wipe out any competition we had on the world oil market, and devastate the economies of oil-producing antagonists such as Venezuela, Saudi Arabia (yes, the Saudis, I don’t trust them) and China. Why is this not done? The oil companies care nothing for national security, only for the bottom line.

Of course they’re not making a big deal out of it here- most Americans have only been alerted to Alaska and California- where the oil companies have convenient antagonists in the tree-huggers who won’t let them drill, thus keeping oil prices up by keeping the supply down. It seems as though the Bakken is catching on, however, and I’ve started to hear more and more about companies developing interest in th eregion- obviously somethings going on, because here in Houston at least, we’ve seen a 35 cent per gallon drop in the price of gas, just in the last week. The trend seems to be continuing, and this may be a result of both the Bakken getting drilled, and the anticipated output from the new refinery (- see part 4 of this series) being built in South Dakota
